ADSHEAD William "Bill"

William known as Bill, was born in 1897 at Stockport, England, was a popular local police officer in Gnowangerup from  October 1936 to 1948. 
He was a member of the British Police Force. He gave his profession as blacksmith. He was married to Annie and they had two children - Beryl ad Brian.

An ex-military man who served in World War I with the 21st Manchester Regiment, he was also a physical training instructor in the British Army and a member of the British and West Australian Police Forces.

Throughout his career, Bill received a Bronze Medal and a Red Cross Award.

Standing nearly six feet tall and married upon enlisting, Bill actively engaged in community activities, building a gymnasium and offering classes for local children.

His respect for Aboriginal people was evident in a report he submitted upon his transfer. Additionally, Bill was a talented artist, with his sketches appearing in local newspapers, autograph books, and picture frames.
He was a member of the R.S.L. and was invited to be President but declined stating a possible conflict of interest. During World War II, he served as a member of the Volunteer Defence Corps (VDC) in Gnowangerup. Over his career, Bill was promoted through the ranks and transferred to various locations, including Perth, Northam and Gingin 

He retired in 1957 and passed away on 26th September 1981 at the age of 82 in Innaloo.
